Overall in very good condition. The wooden surfaces present with rich figuring and wonderful color variations of light to dark brown, that is very harmonious with the color of the leather on the top. The wood surfaces have been sensitively refinished and presents with very minor surface scratches, a few minor edge abrasions, a few minor discolorations and a few minor stabilized hairline age cracks, consistent with age and gentle use. Minor traces of wear to the handles of the drawers, visible in the catalogue illustration. The desk retains its original leather top. The leather surfaces with minor surface scratches, minor discoloration and a few traces of wear consistent with age and gentle use. The metal surfaces with minor surface scratches and minor discolorations consistent with the aging of the material. The proper right side leg of the desk presents with a three shelf system to the exterior. The clock is an extraordinary work by Jaeger Lecoultre and is a wonderful addition to the desk. Movement is not guaranteed to run at the time of cataloging and was not tested for accuracy of time and may need service at the buyer’s discretion. When viewed is person this desk shows an elegant and rare shape that is further emphasized in the intricate detailing throughout. The original leather imparts a warmth to the form and coloration. A masterwork by the artist showing Dupre-Lafon’s signature modernist aesthetic heavily informed by his architectural training. ---

Catalogue Note

This lot has been authenticated by the legal successors of Paul Dupré-Lafon.

As critic Bernard Champigneulle stated in 1929, Dupré-Lafon’s designs “satisfied both the spirit and sense of comfort while maintaining perfect elegance.” Unencumbered by extraneous ornamentations, his creations combine linearity, purity of form, harmonious proportions, functionalism and the finest materials. The present lot is a perfect example of this aesthetic: instead of being concealed, practical details such as the storage compartments and the clock are highlights of the desk and contribute to the dynamism of the design. The semi-circular shape and intricacy of geometric forms reveal a cubist inspiration, making this desk a true masterpiece.
