Condition

Overall very good condition consistent with age and gentle use. The red painted fronts of the doors present with a slightly less saturated hue when viewed in person than what appears in the catalogue illustration. The surface presents with surface scratches, edge abrasions, and surface dirt throughout. The gilt and silvered surfaces with scattered chips and areas of wear, concentrated primarily to the legs, which are visible in the catalogue illustration. Some of these losses have been restored and others expose the wood underneath. When examined under black light, the painted surfaces of the desk fluoresce unevenly as expected, however clear restoration is visible on the legs, along the upper edge of the pull drawer and to the upper left corner of the right facing compartment door. Both sides of the upper decorative scalloped frieze with minor joint separation consistent with age and gentle use. The two doors with wonderful incised decoration to the interior depicting two swans within a naturalist landscape, contrasting beautifully with the painted geometric motif to the interiors of the cabinets and drawers. Please see Sothebys.com for photograph showing the interior of the drawer and other interior fittings. The metal pulls with dirt to the recessed areas and with evidence of rubbing consistent with age and gentle use. A highly decorative work showcasing the height of Kuehne's aesthetic. This desk is a stylish work displaying both an elegant shape and refined and intricate decoration throughout. ----
