Description
- Emile Claus
- Neige au Matin
- signed Emile Claus lower left; signed and titled on the stretcher
- oil on canvas
- 46.5 by 55.5cm., 18¼ by 21¾in.
Provenance
Henri Florin de Duikingberg; thence by descent to the present owner, grand-daughter of the above
Condition
The artist's canvas is unlined, with traces of pigment, presumably the artist's on the reverse. As just visible in the catalogue illustration there is a faint pattern of fine craquelure which appears to be entirely stable. Ultra-violet light reveals no notable signs of retouching. This painting is in good, virtually original condition.
Presented in a simple modern silver-gilt and black-painted frame, with a turquoise cloth-covered inner slip.
The colours are deeper, less saturated and pink in reality than in the catalogue illustration, especially the yellow-pink tones of the riverbank and the turquoise colours just above this.
