Catalogue Note

Jeune femme dans les champs is one of Breton's studies for Le Goûter exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1886 (now untraced, it was once in the Vanderbilts' collection).  In her diaries, the artist's wife Élodie records several sketches of Catherine Méourt, a young girl of Courrières who posed for the artist at several times of day among the haystacks.  As with so many of his remarkable studies, with the present work Breton employ's vigorous brushwork to record the reaped fields and a brilliant use of color to capture the shifts of saturated sunlight and subtle shadows.
