This present work is a study for Bouguereau's L'Été, one of four decorative panels painted between 1857-1858 for the archivolts in the Salon des Saisons of Emile Pereire's mansion at 35 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Paris (now the British Embassy) (see: Damien Bartoli and Frederick C. Ross, William Bouguereau, Catalogue Raisonné of his Painted Work, New York, 2014, p. 55, no. 1858/ 02B).
