Catalogue Note

In the 1860s, van Schendel would often follow a large composition with smaller versions, such as the present work which is a variation of Avondmarkt (sold in these rooms on October 13, 1993, lot 311).  Both paintings date from 1867, the year the artist first included a new type of paraffin lamp (which gained popularity at the time in The Netherlands) in his nocturnal market scenes.
