Condition

Overall the condition of the plaster is good with minor wear and dirt throughout, including scratches and dents, consistent with age and material. There is some rubbing to the patina at the high points. There are a few small chips, including to the lower edge of the base and inside the proper left ear. There is a stable hairline fissure to the front right corner of the top edge of the socle.

Catalogue Note

Plaster versions of the Prince Imperial are exceedingly rare. The three casts recorded by Poletti and Richarme were all made between 1865 and 1869. Only the example at Versailles is dated to Easter 1865 like the present bust (inv. no. MV5398).
