Catalogue Note

This very finely cast bronze bust is derived from the model by Robert Shout, of which there is a gilt bronze version on loan to the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich from the collection of Lord Cottesloe (inv. no. SCU 0083). The high quality of the present bust indicates that it was cast in the early 19th century, probably shortly after Nelson's death when his popularity was at its zenith.
