Description

  • Bust of the Venus de Milo
  • white marble, on a white marble socle
  • French, 19th century

Provenance

private European collection

Condition

Overall the condition of the bust is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some veining to the marble consistent with the material, notably an open vein to the proper left shoulder, and another slightly open vein to the truncation at the back. There are several dirt marks, in particular to the top of the head, and pencil marks to the proper right cheek. The truncation of the proper left arm has a deliberately rough polish. There is a circular marble insert to the socle at the back. There are several chips and abrasions to the edges, in particular to the bottom edge of the socle. There appears to be some weathering to the surface, notably to the hair.
