Condition
Overall the condition of the plaster is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few lacunae, consistent with casting. The band below the hat on the proper right side appears to have been reattached, and the joints are slightly visible. There are a few chips to the paint, including to the collar at the front. There is further wear to the paint at the high points. There are several small nicks, in particular to the shoulders. A few pieces of felt are glued to the bottom edge.

Berthoud produced a series of busts of the actress Sarah Bernhardt, the darling of the European Art Nouveau movement, in several guises. A gilt bust from the series is in the Arwas collection and is illustrated in V. Arwas, Art Nouveau. The French Aesthetic, London, 2002, pp. 154-155.
