Schedel's chronicle, a history of the world from the Creation to his own time, is remarkable for its illustrations, its graphic designs, its printing and for its woodcuts and depictions of cities. It also includes the famous early map of Europe (by Hieronymus Münzer after Nicolas Cusa) and a Ptolemaic world map (Shirley 19). The many woodcut illustrations include events from the Bible, pictures of human monstrosities, portraits of kings, queens, saints and martyrs, and allegorical pictures of miracles.





Provenance: Christoph Jakob Trew (physician and botanist, 1695-1769), large armorial engraved bookplate (somewhat damp-stained). Trew, the author of Hortus nitidissimis... floribus (Nuremberg, 1750-1786) and Plantae selectae (Augsburg, 1750-1763), owned an impressive library of over 30,000 volumes together with numerous natural history specimens, which he donated to the University of Altdorf just before his death (they are now in the University of Erlangen).
