Matthias Weischer

Matthias Weischer is internationally renowned for his paintings of multi-layered interiors, in which the perception of space serves as the source for both context and motive. His collage-like interiors are rich in texture and detail. Tending towards the theatrical, Weischer often adopts a classic genre painting technique where the viewer can look directly into a room as if the “fourth wall is missing”. The décor of Weischer’s interiors suggests they are a little outmoded and unfashionably staid. Arguably posing a question about the obsolescence of consumerist culture, Weischer seems to be suggesting that the objects themselves do not lose value; we rob them of it. Weischer constructs, repositions, paints and over-paints in a manner that is both cryptic and brazen. Though seemingly convincing on first view, many of his interiors could not work in reality: the shadows are wrong, the architecture ambitious to the point of unfeasible. The overall impression Weischer creates is that of a world out of kilter, where perception itself is called into question. Through the development of new techniques and textures, the surfaces of Weischer's paintings are now highly animated, and the energy of a particular scene immerses the viewer in a charged and turbulent environment.
