Catalogue Note

Rosa Loy was born 1958 in Zwickau in the former German Democratic Republic.

In the early 80s she studied horticulture in Berlin and from 1985 -1993 she studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig - first graphic design and later painting. Loy integrates femininity, mystery, and notions of beauty in her figurative paintings and offers a multi-layered interpretation of her work. Through her specific pictorial world and the diversity of the women’s roles she depicts, Loy is an advocate for individual life styles as opposed to any normative image of womanhood. The women are surrounded by a world between reality, myths and fairy-tales, which is visualised by Loy through he free use of stylistic means and sources of inspiration. Loy expertly mixes disparate spaces, times, and styles; interposing outlines, colours, and dabs. She works in casein and combines various techniques on canvas and paper. Her work also reflects her partnership with her husband, Neo Rauch, with whom she has been married since 1985. As a successful artist couple, they both act on the international stage. Each provides an independent oeuvre, which is on the one hand fed by variety, and on the other by the similarities of the two artists. As a working couple, they document how the forces of the masculine and the feminine can be intertwined successfully with each other.
