Condition

The drawing is in good condition. The sheet is stuck on the mount by the 4 edges. The paper of the front side is slightly darker than on the photography of the catalogue. A few foxings are scattered on the front and on the reverse. There is an old stain on the left edge (visible on the photography).

Catalogue Note

Le recto de ce dessin est le seul dessin préparatoire connu pour la Scène érotique , (Getty Museum, Malibu-cf, Germain Bazin, Théodore Géricault. Etude critique, documents et catalogue raisonné, Paris, 1990, vol.VII, n°2769, reproduit p.284 ). Datable autour de 1816-1817, il présente quelques variantes par rapport à la femme allongée dans le tableau : son bras droit est replié et elle regarde vers le haut. Le drap qui la recouvre dans le tableau est suggéré dans le dessin, laissant apparaître son corps par transparence. Le thème d'Hercule traité au verso évoque les nombreuses études sur la vie d'Hercule que Géricault fit pendant son déjour à Rome en 1816 et 1817.
