Condition

Under the naked-eye: The painting appears in overall very good state of conservation. It is painted on a wood panel made with one plank prepared and coated with fibers behind. Since it has been very correctly cleaned during the second half of the twentieth century, the glazes are well preserved. Under the UV light: The painting appears under a green uniform varnish. We notice a very thin lack of restoration, about two millimeters in the left trees. Very beautiful state.

Catalogue Note

Ce merveilleux petit tableau est inspiré à Hubert Robert par le temple de l'Amour bâti pour Marie Antoinette au Petit Trianon par Richard Mique en 1778. Le monument se situe sur une île au centre d'un lac artificiel. En 1785, date de notre tableau, Hubert Robert a été engagé comme Dessinateur des Jardins du Roi. Il s'occupait alors de redessiner le parc de Trianon dans un style plus pittoresque et naturel, on imagine qu'il voyait très souvent le temple de l'Amour à cette époque.

Un dessin au fusain reprenant exactement la statue de notre tableau est conservé par le Département des Arts graphiques du Musée du Louvre (n°11533).

Le tableau sera inclus dans le catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre de l'artiste actuellement en préparation par l'institut Wildenstein.
