Catalogue Note
Anlass für das kleine, detailliert gemalte Bild von Cuno Amiet war die Schwangerschaft seiner Frau Anna. Auf einer gezeichneten Studie ist Anna deutlich als Modell zu erkennen. Die individuellen Gesichtszüge seiner Frau veränderte Amiet zu einer allegorischen Stilisierung.
Das Motiv der schwangeren Frau unter einem Apfelbaum steht in engem Bezug mit den verschiedenen Fassungen der Hoffnung. Anna Amiet erlitt zur Zeit der Entstehung des Bildes eine Fehlgeburt. Dieses Erlebnis war prägend für Amiet, so sehr, dass die Allegorie der Fruchtbarkeit in vielen seinen späteren Versionen der Obsternte thematisiert wurde.
