the gently rounded sides rising to a slightly incurved rim, applied overall with a bubble suffused, opaque yuebai (moon white) glaze draining at the rim to a pale mushroom color, the exterior with fine craquelure, and terminating unevenly above the short, neatly cut unglazed foot ring, Japanese wood box

Condition

The surface with wear, scattered iron spots and burst glaze bubbles and the bowl is slightly warped. There are two fine short haircracks running across the rim and a small old restored flake chip to the rim edge.

Catalogue Note

One of the ‘Five Famous Wares of the Song Dynasty’, 'Jun' ware was celebrated for the thick intense glaze that was best suited to simple, perfectly proportioned forms. Bowls of this size and shape include two in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, published in A Panorama of Ceramics in the National Palace Museum: Chun Ware, Taipei, 1999, pls. 80 and 95.
