Catalogue Note
The Vostok Programme, in direct competition with the United States' Project Mercury, launched six manned spaceflights between 1961 and 1963. The first of these, Vostok 1, made the 27-year-old Yuri Alexeievich Gagarin (1934-1968) the first man in space on 12 April 1961. Recorded on this vase are Gagarin and the pilots of the three subsequent flights which took place in 1962: German Titov, who manned the first space flight lasting a full day and Andriyan Nikolaev and Pavel Popovich, who piloted the first two simultaneous space flights.
