Catalogue Note

Worldwide coverage of the Papanin expedition made all of the team members celebrities, including the Husky mix Jolly (Veselyi) who accompanied them; children were particularly enamoured of the dog.  Papanin did not share their feelings and wanted to give the dog to the Moscow Zoo.  After a public outcry, the dog was given to Stalin and lived out the rest of his days at his dacha outside Moscow, cared for by the staff.
