Catalogue Note
August Karl Spiess (1817-1904) was one of the most talented graduates of the sculpture department at the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1847. He went on to work at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg for two years, acquainting himself with the tastes of the Court as well as the Imperial collections, before joining the Imperial Porcelain Factory as a sculptor in 1849. His range of subjects included cupids, graceful gardeners and flower girls, court ladies and cavaliers, and other figures typical of the fashionable Rococo Revival. His most popular designs were copied by the Gardner Manufactory.
