Condition
The sheet has discoloured. There is a crease in the lower left edge. There are water stains around the hand of the figure on the left and in the background. There is some scattered foxing and surface scratches in places. The reverse of the sheet is attached to the mount in four places. Held in a gold painted wooden frame with velvet mount behind glass. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note
The figure in the present lot can be seen at the front of the procession in Vereshchagin's larger drawing (fig.1), which was acquired by Pavel Tretyakov in 1875 and known to have been executed in Paris with material gathered during his journeys in the Caucasus with Lev Lagorio in 1865.
