Catalogue Note
It has been suggested the present works are set designs for Krasny vykhr (The Red Whirlwind) which opened at the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Petrograd on 29 October 1924 with set designs by Leonid Chupyatov. The first ever ballet on a revolutionary theme, this innovative production directed by Alexander Gauk was based on the struggles between the revolutionary and counter-revolutionary forces and was only ever performed three times.
