Catalogue Note

Lt. Pavel Vladimirovich Karsakov was a close friend of Oleg Pantiukhov. They served together in His Majesty's Life Guards Rifle Regiment and the two families became close. Karsakov and his family are remembered frequently in Pantiukhov's memoirs. The Karsakovs aided the Pantiukhovs while they lived in the Crimea before their escape from Russia. By family tradition, Karsakov gave these cufflinks to Pantiukhov, although the inscriptions suggest that they were a gift from the senior officer to his younger colleague. It is possible that they ended up with the Pantiukhovs once again after their escape.
