Catalogue Note

The shape of the present bell suggests that it was hung to be struck with a hand-held clapper. More specifically, the inscription on the bell reveals that it was rung when food, and breakfast in particular (pransuris), was served. The inclusion of roundels with St. Mark's lion, the Agnus Dei and two angels suggest a religious location, such as a refectory. The present type of bell is exceedingly rare but similar script can be found on a Northern Netherlandish church bell dated 1285 in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. Bfr. 373).
