Condition
The catalogue repdrouction is very representative in colour tone, but the size does not do justice to the wonderful detail of this work.
The canvas is flat, nicely stretched, and stable. It has a recent relining. Likewise the paint surfae is pristine, with a very faint craquelure in the sky, to be expected for a painting of this age.
Inspection under Ultraviolet light shows that there has been no retouching and the exquisite condition of the paint surface is the result of this work being very well-cared for by its owners. Details like the still reflection of the stack of timber in the water's surface (lower right), the delicate reeds, the rushing of the stream, the smoke from the man's pipe, and the light on the town in the far distance are all preserved and captivating.
This lot is offered in a decorative gilt frame in good condition, which matches those of lots 49, 51, and 52. It is absolutely ready to hang and enjoy.
