  • bears inscription upper left: VON GOTTES GNNADEN, IOHANNS PHALZ / GRAVE BEI REHEIN, IN BEYERN IVLICH / V VELDENTZ, SPONHEIM DENMARK . VND / AVENSPVRG, HERR ZV REVENSTEIN. / ANNO. MDCXXXI
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The picture is more mutued in tone and less acidic in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been lined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition apart from some scattered retouching in the background along the upper edge centred around what maybe an old restored area of damage at the canvas edge abve the sitter's right ear. Otherwise there is surface dirt and a varnish overall. Examination under ultravilet confirms the aforementioned retouching and reveals a few scattered minor cosmetic retouchings elsewhere however the thickness of the varnish impedes full inspection. Offered in a plain wood frame with a gilt slip in good overall condition.
