Condition

The pictures are very slightly lighter in tone and les acidic in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. Both have been lined and in both the paint is thin as a result of the lining. The first (him) is in fair overall condition with some retouching visible in the background centre left and right and under a raking light it appears that the costume has been strengthened. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the aforementioned work and reveals some further scattered retouching in the background and to the flesh tones. There is a thick varnish and surface dirt overall. The second (her) is in fair overall condition. There is retouching visible in the background centre left which runs down from the coat of arms and there is again strengthening in the costume. Examination under ultraviolet confirms these and reveals additional scattered retouches to her dress, the background centre right, the collar and the flesh. Again surface dirt and a varnish prevail.
