Condition
The figure is less anaemic than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has a taut relining. The paint surface is in very good overall ready to hang condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. Examination under ultraviolet reveals scattered flecks of old minor cosmetic retouching to the face, otherwise a thick varnish impedes inspection. Overall the picture is in good country house condition. Offered in a decorative gilt wood and plaster rococo frame in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note
Although born in Germany, Carl Christian Erdmann Duke of Württemberg-Oels spent his early career rising through the ranks of the Danish army up until the death of King Christian VI, at which point he returned to his hometown of Oels. In 1747, the Duke was made Generalleutnant by King Friedrich II of Prussia, appointed governor of Breslau, and awarded the Order of the Black Eagle, at that time the highest recognition for chivalry in Prussia. In this portrait the Duke is not wearing any of the orders which he received in 1747, so it is likely that this was painted before that year.
