Description

  • A pierced ivory brisé fan with jewelled gold guards, probably French, circa 1820
  • gold, diamonds; ivory, mother of pearl
  • length 19cm., 20in.
in style troubadour, each gold guard impressed with scrolled ornament enclosing the name: Luitpold, in rose diamonds below two larger collet-set rose diamonds, the very finely-pierced sticks alternating patterns of flowers and ornament, mother of pearl button

Provenance

Third son of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, later King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig, later Prince Regent of Bavaria, was born on 12 March 1821. It is probable that the fan was given to Princess Therese on the occasion of his birth.;
thence by descent

Condition

One guard is slightly curved at the top; the ivory is in excellent condition apart from a little staining and a couple of tiny edge pieces lacking. The joining ribbon is broken in several places and it is possible that a pair of sticks is lacking as the pin is very loose.
