Description

  • After Antoine-Jean Gros
  • Joachmin Murat as King of Naples
  • oil on canvas
  • 131 by 116cm., 51½ by 45¾in.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is a faint pattern of craquelure overall which is not visually distracting. Ultraviolet light reveals a number of areas of repaired tears, notably: a circa 20 by 7cm area in the centre of the right edge, a circa 10 by 30cm area in the horse's front legs, a circa 10 by 7cm area in the rider's left arm and torso, and a circa 9 by 14cm area in the background in the upper right quadrant, as well as some further smaller repairs in the horse's neck and scattered minor spots. Under normal light the work's overall appearance is good, and it is ready to hang. Presented in an decorative gilt frame, as visible in the catalogue illustration.
