Catalogue Note
Autograph lyrics to "U.S. Blues" comprising the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, and an unrecorded stanza from the final version of the song. The song was first performed in February 1974 at Winterland Auditorium. The verso contains the first portion of Robert Hunter's "Alligator Moon Suite" entitled "Mesa Linda" for an unreleased solo album, prepared in 1978.
While the country was immersed in political turmoil, a first impression of "US Blues" that it criticized popular symbols would be a mistake. From the start, the reference to "Blue Suede Shoes" shows that this is a rock and roll tune, summarizing aspects of the national character, because it is Uncle Sam who wears blue suede shoes, but the references come thick and fast including P.T. Barnum and Charlie Chan.
