Catalogue Note

The event took place on the 11 December 1968 from 12 pm to 5 pm (though it lasted overnight), on the initiative of the Rolling Stones. They invited John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell as "the Incredible Dirty Mac" and the Who, Jethro Tull and Taj Mahal. Originally meant to be released by the BBC, it never was, the Rolling Stones considering their performance inadequate.

The live album was supposed to be released several times, including in 1975, when Alan Aldridge designed this cover. But the album as well as the film finally appeared only in 1996. Rumors said they never showed the film because the Who's performance was much better than theirs. Janet Maslin wrote in 1996 in the New York Times: "Rumor had it that the Stones, who were up all night before their segment was filmed, thought they looked tired and felt upstaged by the high-energy Who. It hardly looks that way as Mick Jagger's fabulous performance nearly turns this into a one-man show" (NYT, 12 October 1996).
