Catalogue Note

The landscape painter Philips Koninck made about eight etchings, all landscapes. Most of these were originally attributed by Bartsch to Rembrandt, whose influence they strongly reflect. Koninck may have worked at Rembrandt's studio and seems to have been part of his circle of friends when he moved to Amsterdam in the 1640s.

In the present work the location depicted has been identified by Frits Lugt as a house in one of the bulwarks of Amsterdam's fortifcations, the 'de Rose' or 'rijck' bulwark. According to Lugt, Rembrandt also drew this house and others in this area.
