Provenance
Irving Galleries, Palm Beach, 2000
Condition
These glossy photographs are heavily ferrotyped. As is typical of prints circulated for publication, a number of creases are visible: long linear creases and some small, sharp crescent-shaped creases, some of which appear to break the emulsion.
Welcome Home, New York Harbor (1947) -
Upon close examination, a number of pin-point-sized impressions that do not appear to break the emulsion are visible overall. There is a small slightly blue-toned area in the central portion of the image, possibly retouching that has faded with age. This print has thin white margins, which exhibit wear, small losses to the upper paper ply, and creasing.
The reverse of the print is stamped in blue ink 'Life Photo by Andreas Feininger.' Also on the reverse are the following notations in pencil, unless otherwise noted: 'Photo (1) bas gauge bild 16,1 x 20,3'; '89-1' (circled); '5805' (circled); ' and reduction notations in red pencil. The reverse of the print is soiled from handling and there is a one-inch rust-colored deposit of indeterminate nature.
Commuters Leaving the Staten Island Ferry (1941) -
As is typical of the ferrotyping process, there is a slight unevenness to the overall glossy surface. This print is trimmed to the image, with resultant light edge wear. The reverse of the print is stamped in black ink: 'Photograph by Andreas Feininger.' Also on the reverse is the following annotation in ink: 'NYC-40, p. 41.'
