Condition

This photograph is on the semi-glossy paper characteristic of Weston's work in the last half of the 1930s through the 1940s. The photograph is essentially in excellent condition. When examined closely, an area of slightly warmer tonality can be seen in the lower portion of the print. The print is mounted to thin white board. The board and print are very slightly rippled. Weston's initials and date on the front of the mount are clearly written, and his penciled signature and title on the reverse are robust. The reverse of the mount shows some faint overall age-darkening and occasional soiling.

Catalogue Note

Extant prints of the present dune study are scarce.  Conger accounts for only a handful in institutional collections: the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; Art Institute of Chicago; the Huntington Library, San Marino; and a later Project Print in the collection of the University of California at Santa Cruz.
