Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • 'CLIFF AND FERRY STREETS'
  • Gelatin silver print
the photographer's Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' and caption stamps, with title, date, and annotations in colored pencil, on the reverse, 1935 (Yochelson, Wall Street, pl. 41, the full negative)

Condition

This slightly warm-toned print, on thin double-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface, is in generally very good condition. Abbott has deliberately trimmed the photograph (to an overall dimension of 8-1/2 by 3-1/4 inches), heightening the dramatic composition of this image. In the upper right and lower left corners, there are small sharp creases that appear to break the emulsion. A few tiny impressions and soft barely-perceptible creases are visible overall upon close examination. On the reverse of the print, the 'Changing New York' caption stamp is annotated in colored pencil with the following information: Title: 'Cliff and Ferry Streets' Place: 'Manhattan' Neg. # '49' Code: 'I-[?]' Date: 'November 29 - 1935'
