Description
- Jacob Jacobs
- The Arrival of Sultan Abdülmecid at the Nusretiye Mosque
- signed J. Jacobs / 42 lower right
- oil on canvas
- 48 by 69.5cm., 19 by 27¼in.
Provenance
Sale: Sotheby's, London, 20 October 1993, lot 242
Condition
The canvas has been relined. Ultra-violet light reveals strokes of retouching to a number of interlocking repaired tears in a 22 by 10cm area to the right of the composition's centre (which have faintly discoloured and are visible to the naked eye); to a couple of much smaller horizontal repairs just below this in the pier, and some scattered minor strokes towards the upper-left and upper-right corners of the composition. The overall appearance of the work under normal light is good.
Presented in a simple gilt frame, with a cloth-covered inner slip.
