Description

  • Niels Simonsen
  • The Port of Algiers, with the Jamaa al-Jdid and Jemaa Kebir Mosques
  • signed and dated Simonsen Munchen 1843 lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 66.5 by 102.5cm., 26¼ by 40½in.

Provenance

Private collection (purchased in Lebanon prior to World War II); sale: Sotheby's, London, 12 November 2008, lot 15
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

Condition

The canvas has been relined (however not all areas of the lining canvas appear to have been fully adhered to the artist's canvas). Ultraviolet light reveals some small areas of retouching in the sky, notably a circa 2 by 10cm area near the centre of the upper edge, a circa 4 by 5cm area in a cloud in the upper right quadrant, some small strokes above the ships in the distance, and a number of strokes of strengthening towards the lower edge including just around the signature but apparently not in it. The overall appearance of the painting is good and it is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

In the foreground can be seen Jamaa al-Jdid, or New Mosque, also known in French as La Mosquée de la Pêcherie due to its proximity to the sea. Beyond lies the Great Mosque of Algiers, Jemaa Kebir, built in 1097 and the oldest mosque in the city.
