The canvas has been relined. Under ultra-violet light the old varnish fluoresces unevenly in some areas making the surface somewhat difficult to read, however only some very minor signs of retouching are clearly visible, notably a number of spots in the background in the upper-right quadrant. This work is in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a substantial gilt decorative frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1890, this highly polished work originates from an in situ study measuring 26 by 20cm exhibited in 1895 at the Empire of India Exhibition (no. 3), London. Weeks executed a number of studies of shop fronts in Bombay and Ahmedabad in the late 1880s, which he worked up as finished paintings in his Paris studio later on.

This exceptional painting of a perfumer’s shop is an outstanding example for its glistening blue & white Chinese vases, masterly studies in porcelain reflections, and the superb rendition of a bejeweled Nautch dancer wrapped in gold sampling a tiny vase of perfume. The seated figure to the left is an Afghan identified by Weeks in what he termed an 'immense red turban'.
