Condition
Framed under glass. The surface and colours are fresh and unrestored. The sheet has been glued to the mount at three points along the top edge, traces of the glue have pushed through the blues of the sky in the top left and right corners, and there are some further minute abrasions along the upper edge.

Catalogue Note
Painted in 1855. Chersonesus (modern-day Kherson, Ukraine) was an ancient Greek colony, founded in the sixth century B.C., on the south-western coast of the Crimean Peninsula. Although by the nineteenth century part of the Russian Empire, the region retained a large Turkish population, having been under Ottoman rule from the fifteenth until the eighteenth centuries.
