Description
- Hexagonal betrothal casket with scenes from the Judgment of Paris
- certosina wood, silver, bone and horn, lined with silk, fixed on a later bone and wood base
- Embriachi workshop Italian, Venice, mid-15th century
with an indistinctly inscribed label to the inside of the lid
Condition
Overall the condition of the casket is good with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There are some minor repairs to the inlay, especially at the edges, some in a blue material. One of the bone corners of the lid is restored and a section of the lower bone corner of the drum has been reattached. There is a stable split to the bone knop on the top of the lid. One of the joints on the wooden upper edge of the drum is slightly open. The lower section on which the casket rests is a later addition. The lining is discoloured and slightly frayed at the edges but is otherwise very well done.
