Description

  • Tondo with a coat of arms
  • glazed terracotta, in a painted wood frame
  • Benedetto Buglioni (1459/60 -1521) Italian, Florence, circa 1500

Condition

Overall the condition of the terracotta is stable. The roundel is composed in sections and joints are visible. There are two noticeably restored sections to the frame on the left side, particularly at the egg-and-dart border. There is a prominent fissure running through the centre of the coat of arms and across the top of the arms below the bishop's hat; these may be restored breaks. The entire ensemble has been placed within the present frame at a date later to its manufacture, and there are various paint and plaster restorations, in particular at the edges of the frame and of the central emblema. There is pitting in the glaze, in particular to the bottom and right sections of the frame. There are areas of particular wear to the glaze along the outer edges of the frame, in particular on the right hand side. There are one or two small lacunae in the terracotta, including one to the top of the egg-and-dart frieze. The wood frame is in good condition. It is composed in sections and joints are visible. There is stable splitting consistent with the material and some losses to the paint. There is a metal mount at the back.
