Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • German, Cologne, early 14th century

Condition

Given the age of the sculpture, the condition is relatively good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. Christ's proper right arm is lost. There is wear to the polychromy, particularly at the high points. The paint may have been refreshed in some areas, such as perhaps the Virgin's face. There is non-active worming to the wood, particularly in the drapery, and at the back. There are a few holes in the back and a patch of canvas. There is a joint at the Virgin's proper right wrist. There are a few losses at the bottom and back due to worming.
