Catalogue Note

This elegant equestrian model recalls the polychromed terracotta horses made by Neapolitan sculptors of creche groups, such as Nicola Vassallo and Lorenzo Mosca. Compare, for example, with the mid-late 18th-century Neapolitan brown horse in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 64.164.107). The present horse is more stylised in appearance, indicating a date earlier in the 18th century, and compares with a smaller leaping horse sold at Christie's London on 29 July 2014, lot 226.
