Description
- Francesco Furini
- Narcissus
- oil on canvas, laid down on board
- 35 3/4 by 57 in.; 90.8 by 144.8 cm.
Condition
The canvas is laid down on a thick piece of Masonite board. The paint surface has thinned over time and become pressed as a result of the backing, resulting in the sinking of some flesh tones and an overall darkening of the paint surface. Retouches are visible under UV scattered both above and below a relatively uniform older varnish. These are located notably in the hat and face of the figure, his arm and midsection, as well as an area of the background extending approximately 4 inches to the left of his outstretched hand. The picture could almost certainly be improved with a reevaluation of the older retouches and a careful restoration. In a carved wooden frame.
