Condition

The old glue relining is firm and stable. the paint surface has been a bit pressed in the relining and the dark background and lighter area around saint's head are slightly thin. however, none of this is overly distracting and the painting reads well and presents a strong image. with naked eye, one can see some scattered retouches in background at upper and middle left, and a line of tiny pinprick losses in white drapery lower center. nothing can be seen under UV light through the old varnish.

Catalogue Note

Though likely by an as yet unidentified Roman artist, this portrait of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (March 9, 1568 – June 21, 1591; canonized in 1726) was owned by the early twentienth century Goya scholar Xavier Desparmet Fitz-Gerald, who on more than one occasion published it as an autograph work by Goya.
