Condition

Arms lacking as shown in catalogue image. Worming, losses, abrasions, and age cracks, including age crack down the center of the chest. Traces of gilding in hair and beard. Some losses including front of proper right foot and proper left little toe. Remaining proper left toes reattached. Hole in head for insertion of halo. Hole in proper right buttock where knot in wood has fallen out. Metal ring and threaded insert in upper back for mounting.

Catalogue Note

The treatment of the hair, torso and general patterns of the  folds of the perizonium can be compared with the figure of Christ by Giovanni Pisano in the Massa Marittima Cathedral (see A. Moskowitz, Italian Gothic Sculpture. c.1250-c.1400, Cambridge, 2001, fig. 106. Also compare the present corpus with one given to the circle of Pisano and sold from the collection of Salvatore and Francesco Romano by Sotheby's in Florence, October 12-15, 2009, lot 36.
