Condition

Panel is flat, stable, un-cradled, beveled on all four sides. The panel is comprised of two pieces of wood with a horizontal join. Scattered retouches are found under UV light, mostly isolated to the background. Another area of retouching is found along the join at the far right side, an area which also has a small spot of lifting. The main still life elements are in good condition overall, the apple with the fly at top does have some small retouches. Could be hung in its current state, in a carved wooden frame.

Catalogue Note

Assteyn is believed to have gained his training from his father Abraham Bartolomeusz., following which, in 1631, he became a member of the painters' guild in Dordrecht. As the present work demonstrates, his style was deeply influenced by that of Ambrosius Bosschaert and Balthasar van der Ast in his employment of a slightly elevated vantage point and crisply stylized detail. Assteyn’s oeuvre is quite small,  and this unpublished picture is one of only 23 dated works painted between 1628 and 1659 (see L.J. Bol, "Bartolomeus Assteijn, Dordts schilder van blommen en fruy ten", Oud Holland, 68, 1 953, pp.136-148).
