Catalogue Note

Though Van Thulden is perhaps best known for his extensive series of copies after Primaticcio's famous decorations at Fontainebleau, he also created many original compositions, strongly influenced by Rubens but in his own distinctive style.  This exceptionally free drawing can be compared in style with Van Thulden's compositional study for his major altarpiece representing Christ receiving the Virgin into Heaven, painted around 1660.1
