Catalogue Note

Jaap Bolten notes that a finished 'picture drawing' by Bloemaert of this scene, dated 1650, was recorded in several 18th-century sale catalogues, but now seems to be lost.1  The present drawing he dates rather earlier in the artist's career, suggesting that it was Bloemaert's first version of the scene, to which he returned when making the later drawing.  Another, weaker version, dated 1650 and possibly based on the lost drawing, is also known.2 Bloemaert also treated the subject, which comes from Ovid (Metamorphoses, XI, 146-93), in a painting of 1635-40, but there the composition is different.3
